Hospitals and unions: 6 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker’s Hospital Review has reported the following hospital-union events — including protests, elections and contract agreements — since March 6.

1. Nurses at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck (N.D.) voted in favor of joining the Minnesota Nurses Association.

2. Thousands of University of California workers, including service and patient care technical employees, plan to strike on March 20.

3. Technical professionals at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington voted to ratify a new contract with hospital management.

4. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente confirmed plans to transition its in-house landscaping operations to an external vendor, affecting about 60 unionized gardeners.

5. Nurses at two California hospitals walked off the job March 12 over issues arising from the recent sale of the facilities to Santa Clara County.

6. Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass., part of Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health, tried to union bust regarding security and engineering employees, the National Labor Relations Board found.
