CHI St. Alexius workers vote to unionize in North Dakota

Nurses at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck (N.D.) voted in favor of joining the Minnesota Nurses Association, according to the The Bismarck Tribune.

"St. Alexius nurses want to provide top quality care to all our patients by having a voice in our workplace," Margo Maxon, an RN at the hospital, said in a union news release. "Nurses believe coming together and speaking with one voice is the best way to advocate for our patients."

Nurses tried to unionize last year, but that effort failed 158-151. The union did not release vote totals for this month's election.

In a news release, Ellen Holt, CHI St. Alexius vice president of human resources, said the medical center "would have preferred a different outcome that allowed us to maintain our direct working relationship with our nurses," but "remains dedicated to our mission as a healing ministry."
