Hospitals and unions: 10 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review has reported on the following hospital-union events — including protests, legal issues and elections — since May 16.

1. Berkshire Medical Center nurses plan June 18 strike
Registered nurses from Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center intend to hold a one-day strike beginning at 7 a.m. June 18.

2. Wilkes-Barre hospital nurses protest lockout after daylong strike
Registered nurses from Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital protested June 3 after they were not allowed to return to work following a one-day strike.

3. Michigan nurses OK labor deal with Duke LifePoint
Nurses at Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.) approved a labor deal with Brentwood, Tenn.-based Duke LifePoint Healthcare.

4. Nurse says she was harassed for trying to break up union in Kansas City
A nurse from Kansas City, Mo.-based Research Medical Center claims she and her colleagues faced intimidation when they tried to decertify the union at the facility.

5. New Jersey hospital nurses bring in federal mediator after authorizing strike
Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center nurses are bringing a federal mediator to the bargaining table.

6. Baystate Franklin, nurses strike tentative labor deal: 4 things to know
Greenfield, Mass.-based Baystate Franklin Medical Center reached a tentative contract agreement with nurses after two strikes and more than a year of negotiations.

7. Mayo, Albert Lea workers reach labor deals
Unionized workers at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System's campus in Albert Lea, Minn., ratified new contracts.

8. Nurses from Northwell Health hospital give union OK to call strike
Nurses from Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital's Ocean Breeze campus voted May 18 to authorize the option to strike.

9. Shuttle drivers at St. Louis hospital, university vote to unionize
Shuttle drivers at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University, both in St. Louis, voted in favor of unionization on May 17.

10. Stony Brook University Hospital nurses protest over pay
Nurses and emergency medical service workers protested at Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital May 16 over wages.
