Here are three quotes from Baylor nurses about their experience treating victims of the ambush:
1. Kaley Almanza, RN, had finished her trauma department orientation at the hospital just four days before the tragedy. While some of the members on the nursing team had served military medical units in Afghanistan, the sight of multiple bullet-riddled bodies coming through the door was new for Ms. Almanza.
She said, “This is probably the closest I’ll ever come to war.”
2. Greg Terry, RN, chair of the hospital’s disaster committee, told Dallas Morning News the staff trained regularly for mass shooting responses but the real thing was something different. Still, Mr. Terry was impressed with the response of his colleagues.
“Everybody did exactly what they should do. And that’s what we do as trauma nurses. You don’t get distracted by things that are horrible. You do what you are trained to do,” said Mr. Terry.
3. Brittany Fairchild, RN, who also works on the hospital’s disaster committee, reported seeing physicians and nurses hugging and crying.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” she said. “It was overwhelming.”
