Healthcare workers have participated in labor strikes across the U.S., citing concerns about staffing, patient care, working conditions and employee retention. But there are several situations where such walkouts were averted after contracts were reached with significant pay raises.

Members of the California Nurses Association are set to begin a nine-day strike Dec. 24 at Sutter Health's Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, which has campuses in Oakland and Berkeley.

The United States government issued a $1.78 million fine against Worcester, Mass.-based Saint Vincent Hospital after it overcharged Medicare for inpatient services, including cardiac surgeries. Nurses are "outraged" at the hospital's leadership and its owner, Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare.
