It's a great time to be a human resources professional, according to a Jan. 18 LinkedIn report. 

From Las Vegas to Oklahoma, mass layoffs are hitting hospitals and health systems nationwide. And with big-name companies like Microsoft announcing job cuts in bulk, firings are front-of-mind for many leaders. 

Members of the New York State Nurses Association, who work at public healthcare facilities in New York City, rallied Jan. 18 for a new contract.

Resident physicians at Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health's four San Francisco California Pacific Medical Center locations have signed cards in support of joining the Committee of Interns and Residents, the union confirmed to Becker's Jan. 18.

Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital employees, who are members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, staged a walkout Jan. 17 outside the Boston-based facility, according to hospital and union statements shared with Becker's.  

Hospital and union labor disputes have intensified in recent months as workers call on hospitals to improve staffing levels and provide competitive pay and other benefits. 

Amid contract negotiations, nurses plan to rally Jan. 20 at Providence's Oregon headquarters in Portland to call for improved paid family and sick leave standards. 

Nurses at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, N.Y., have voted to join the New York State Nurses Association, according to hospital and union statements. 

About 7,000 New York City nurses have ended their strike after reaching tentative contracts Jan. 12.
