NH facilities try to attract nurses with sign-on bonuses, loan forgiveness

New Hampshire nursing homes and facilities caring for elderly patients are experiencing trouble employing nurses, leading some facilities to offer incentives to attract nurses and aides, New Hampshire Union Leader reports.

Incentives such as sign-on bonuses and loan-forgiveness programs are being offered to entice nurses to facilities. For instance, the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, N.H., is offering $500 sign-on bonuses and a $10,000 loan-forgiveness program, according to the report.

New Hampshire Health Care Association President and CEO Brendan Williams told New Hampshire Union Leader a lack of health benefits contributes to an inability to hire nurses caring for elderly patients at home and nursing home settings. He said this is further induced by low Medicaid reimbursements.
