How staffing variables affect the patient experience, outcomes

As reimbursements are increasingly tied to care quality and patient experience, it’s more important than ever for hospitals to optimize their staffing strategies using workforce technology.

A growing body of research supports the connection between staffing variables and the patient experience. For instance, a recent review of more than 27,000 patient satisfaction surveys conducted by researchers at Nemours Children’s Health System, based in Wilmington, Del., found patients’ needs and expectations change as they move through an integrated care system.

That said, across all four service areas — inpatient, outpatient, emergency and primary care — physician care and nurse care in correlation with personal concern carried the biggest impact on patient satisfaction.
