Workplace violence is surprisingly prevalent in healthcare facilities, yet no federal standard exists that requires violence protections. The ANA provided the following statistics on workplace violence in healthcare facilities, based on information from ongoing ANA surveys.

  • 21 percent of nurse respondents reported feeling a “significant level of risk” for violence at work.
  • 50 percent of respondents said they had experienced verbal or non-verbal aggression from a peer at work.
  • 42 percent reported experiencing verbal or non-verbal aggression from an authority figure at work.
  • 43 percent reported experiencing verbal and/or physical threats from a patient or a patient’s family member.

The “Professional Issues Panel on Workplace Violence and Incivility” has submitted a draft of recommendations for public comment through April 30. The draft includes primary, secondary and tertiary recommendations for nurses and employers to address incivility and bullying as well as workplace violence.
