6 findings on healthcare labor action

Unions won more representation elections last year than they have in any other year in the last decade, according to a report for the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration.

The labor activity report, conducted by IRI Consultants, examines national, regional and state representation union petitions and elections reported by the National Labor Relations Board last year.

Here are six findings from the report.

1. More than 340 union election petitions were filed in healthcare last year, the report found.

2. However, only 241 union representation elections took place in 2016. Of these elections, 81 percent were successful for unions, the report found. That’s the highest success rate for unions in the last 10 years.

3. Only 40 union decertification elections took place in 2016, and unions kept recognition in 43 percent of those elections, the report found.

4. Six states — California, Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New Jersey — see the majority of union organizing activity.

5. The Service Employees International Union remains the dominant organizing union in healthcare, the report said. It found SEIU last year accounted for more than 40 percent of representation petitions filed and nearly 50 percent of representation elections that occurred in healthcare.

6. Out of all U.S. states, California has seen the majority of strike activity.
