Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Health System has acquired Greensburg, Pa.-based Independence Health System’s five hospitals and their affiliated physician practices and outpatient facilities.

The hospitals are Butler (Pa.) Memorial Hospital, Clarion (Pa.) Hospital, Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, Latrobe (Pa.) Hospital and Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg. They will begin operating under WVU Medicine’s brand immediately, according to an Oct. 1 news release.

WVU Health System signed a definitive agreement June 2 to acquire the hospitals. The parties shared plans for the acquisition in mid-November 2025.

Under the acquisition, WVU Health System has committed $800 million over the next five years to modernize the facilities, including Butler Memorial’s emergency room and Westmoreland’s campus. The funds will also help grow clinical services and expand care access across the communities the hospitals serve.

“This marks an exciting and important moment for these hospitals and the communities they serve as they join our network of care across the region,” Albert Wright Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said in the release. “We are grateful to the board members and leaders of these hospitals for placing their trust in us to build upon their success and create new opportunities for growth. We take that responsibility seriously.”

WVU Health System now comprises 30 hospitals across Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It has more than 47,000 employees, including 7,200 providers, and $10 billion in total operating revenue.
