Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health Care and Baystate Health in Springfield, Mass., have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to explore possible opportunities for collaboration.

Any collaboration wouldn’t affect either entity’s ownership, governance, structure, medical staff, academic relationships or affiliations, according to a UMass news release. Additionally, both healthcare organizations would still be free to pursue other strategic opportunities.

UMass and Baystate already have a long-existing relationship and a history of mutual support on various efforts including healthcare quality, clinical practice, pharmacy and infusion medicine, according to the release. Both health systems think they have more to learn from one another and can work together more closely to provide care more effectively and efficiently.
