Boards Approve Merger of Rochester General, Unity Health

The boards of directors of Rochester (N.Y.) General Health System and Unity Health System, also based in Rochester, have signed a merger agreement that will combine the two systems into one organization.

Under the deal, a single parent company will oversee the direction of Rochester General, Unity and all of their affiliates. The new organization, yet to be named, will governed by a board of directors with equal representation from both Rochester General and Unity.

Rochester General and Unity initially entered merger talks in April, and the two systems were finalizing due diligence last month. The deal still must receive regulatory approval. Both organizations expect the deal will close within the next six to 12 months.

Last week, Rochester General also announced it entered into an initial affiliation agreement with 262-bed Clifton Springs (N.Y.) Hospital & Clinic. The new system will look to compete with the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center, an academic medical center anchored by 739-bed Strong Memorial Hospital.
