The week in hospital M&A

From UnityPoint Health planning to acquire a MercyOne hospital to a Georgia hospital set to join Emory Healthcare, here are three hospital M&A moves Becker’s reported during the week of May 26: 

1. West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health signed a letter of intent on May 29 to acquire Sioux City, Iowa-based MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center. The deal includes all of Siouxland Medical Center’s facilities, including the hospital, physician practices and home care services. 

The acquisition is expected to be completed this summer, pending closing conditions.

2. Houston Healthcare, a community health system based in Warner Robins, Ga., will become part of Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare June 1. 

Houston Healthcare will add 282 beds across two hospital campuses and seven outpatient facilities to Emory’s network. It also has nine physician practices and 2,500 employees that will join Emory’s 26,400 employees across 10 hospitals systemwide.

3. Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare is set to acquire five Upland, Pa.-based Crozer Health outpatient locations in Pennsylvania for $50.3 million after Crozer shared plans to shut down and lay off employees in late April.

The sale of the five outpatient locations is expected to close “in the near future,” pending court approval. ChristianaCare is assessing the services and programs that the outpatient centers provide to decide which will be continued, grown or restarted.
