Scripps Health, MD Anderson eye partnership: 5 things to know

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston may enter the San Diego market under a potential partnership with Scripps Health, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Here are five things to know about the potential partnership.

1. MD Anderson and San Diego-based Scripps have confirmed they are discussing a potential partnership. However, neither organization has disclosed details publicly, citing a nondisclosure agreement.

2. An invitation to a Scripps-MD Anderson presentation in June said the organizations are "in discussions about possibly establishing a long-term partnership" that "could result in the formation of an integrated Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center," according to the report.

3. A potential partnership between Scripps and MD Anderson would produce a strong impression with patients and their families. In the San Diego County market, UC San Diego has long been the only hospital with the government's "comprehensive cancer center" status.

4. The potential partnership comes as MD Anderson, currently ranked as the nation's top cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report, has been making efforts to further capitalize on its reputation by creating and building out the MD Anderson Cancer Network, according to the report.

5. People who attended the Scripps-MD Anderson presentation last month have indicated the focus of talks is on this highest level of partnership, which would attempt to fully replicate MD Anderson's services in San Diego — instead of Scripps just buying the MD Anderson name or having limited collaboration, the report states.
