New Bern, N.C.-based CarolinaEast Health System plans to affiliate with Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health to improve access to care in the state.
Under the agreement, announced May 11, CarolinaEast will remain a separate legal entity with its own board.
The organizations said the affiliation will enhance the quality of healthcare and improve access to specialty services in the eastern part of the state.
"Affiliating with UNC Health and working toward becoming a healthcare hub in this region is a tremendous opportunity for CarolinaEast and the people we serve," said Ray Leggett, president and CEO of CarolinaEast. "The prospect of expanding on health education capabilities offered at UNC and welcoming residents, fellows and med students to our facilities will no doubt make us even better and stronger for our region."
