Flemington, N.J.-based Hunterdon Health and Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health signed a letter of intent June 22 to explore a proposed merger between the two nonprofit health systems.
The news followed a vote by both systems’ respective boards of trustees to move the merger forward, according to a June 22 news release shared with Becker’s.
Under the proposed partnership, the two parties will combine resources, technology and expertise to expand and support healthcare that focuses on care, health outcomes, clinical research investments, and academic and community benefit programs.
“The signing of a letter of intent marks the beginning of the next step in a thorough and lengthy process,” Kristy Alfano, MSN, RN, interim president and CEO of Hunterdon Health, said in the release. “In the days ahead, we will remain focused on what matters most – our patients, our employees, our physicians and our communities – as together we explore opportunities to build on our strengths and ensure that high-quality healthcare remains available close to home.”
Ms. Alfano will succeed outgoing Hunterdon Health president and CEO Patrick Gavin when he retires June 30.

The letter of intent is not a final agreement, with no immediate changes planned for benefits, compensation, employee roles, patient care or physician practices. Both parties are working toward a definitive agreement, the release said.
Hunterdon Health comprises its flagship hospital, Hunterdon Medical Center, and a growing network of more than 30 medical practices across central New Jersey. It also features the Hunterdon Medical Center Family Practice Residency program.
Hackensack Meridian Health comprises 18 hospitals, more than 500 care locations, and more than 40,000 employees, the release said.
