Hospital M&A update: 10 latest deals

The total number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions hit a record high in 2018, and dozens of deals have been announced so far this year.

Here are 10 transactions involving hospitals and health systems that were announced, finalized or moved forward in the past month:

1. Top bid for Kentucky hospital falls through
Pineville (Ky.) Community Healthcare received a $7 million takeover bid, but the hospital ended up selling for less than half that amount.

2. Children's National to absorb HSC Health Care System
Two Washington, D.C.-based children's health systems received regulatory approval to integrate, the organizations said Sept. 3.

3. CHS sells 2 Florida hospitals
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems sold two Florida hospitals to Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth.

4. Quorum's sale of California hospital moves forward
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health expects to complete the divestiture of a 106-bed hospital in California in coming months.

5. Michigan hospital joins Ascension
Allegan (Mich.) General Hospital, a 25-bed hospital, joined Ascension Michigan on Sept. 1.

6. Merger creates 5-hospital system in Georgia
The merger of Sandy Springs, Ga.-based Northside Hospital and Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Gwinnett Medical Center was official Aug. 28.

7. Struggling New York hospital to be sold, town board says
The Massena, N.Y., town board voted unanimously on Aug. 26 to sell Massena Memorial Hospital.

8. Allegheny Health Network to add 9th hospital
Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network signed an affiliation agreement with Grove City (Pa.) Medical Center.

9. Prospect Medical Holdings eyes deal with Connecticut hospital
Prospect Medical Holdings, a for-profit hospital operator based in Los Angeles, is exploring an affiliation with Day Kimball Healthcare, a single-hospital system based in Putnam, Conn.

10. State approves Ascension's sale of Connecticut hospital
The Connecticut Office of Health Strategy approved Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare's acquisition of substantially all of the assets of St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn., from Ascension.
