FTC OKs Emory Healthcare, DeKalb Medical partnership: 5 notes

The Federal Trade Commission approved the proposed partnership agreement between Decatur, Ga.-based DeKalb Medical and Emory Healthcare, the Atlanta-based health system announced May 8.

Here are five things to know about the deal.

1. Following the FTC’s approval, the organizations will file an application with the Georgia attorney general’s office.

2. Officials expect to close the deal within 100 days, pending approval by the AG. Once the deal is finalized, DeKalb Medical will integrate into Emory Healthcare.

3. Leaders from both institutions have spent the past several months defining the final agreement and working to ensure a smooth transition.

4. Both organizations have maintained a strong presence in DeKalb County, Ga. Emory has been located in the area for more than 100 years, while DeKalb Medical has served patients and families in the community for 57-plus years.

5. Emory and DeKalb Medical signed a letter of intent to form a strategic partnership last November.
