County Attorney Requests Merger Documents From Kentucky's University Hospital

An attorney from Kentucky's Jefferson County has requested records from University Hospital in Louisville pertaining to its proposed merger with two other systems, according to a Courier-Journal report.

Attorney Mike O'Connell said the public has many questions about the deal. He said the proposed merger deserves scrutiny by a local government attorney since University Hospital has received funding from the government for indigent care.

The merger would combine University Hospital — the city's safety-net hospital and main teaching hospital for the University of Louisville — with Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare, also in Louisville, and Lexington, Ky.-based St. Joseph Health System. The merger would put University Hospital, which was recently-deemed public, under Catholic control.

Mr. O'Connell asked hospital CEO James Taylor to provide any merger-related agreements, documents and reports in its possession. This would include minutes of board meetings and analyses of the deal's feasibility, advantages and disadvantages. If Mr. O'Connell request is denied, he said he will appeal to circuit court, according to the report.
