Community Health Systems acquires Gaffney Medical Center

A Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems' subsidiary has acquired operational control of 125-bed Gaffney (S.C.) Medical Center.

Gaffney was previously owned through a joint venture between Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health and a Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates' subsidiary.

CHS acquired HMA in January, and in October, Novant signed a non-binding letter of intent under which a CHS subsidiary would take over managing and operating Gaffney. After a period of negotiation and mutual due diligence, Novant and CHS reached a final agreement.

"We are pleased to expand our services and hospital footprint in South Carolina through this acquisition, and we look forward to working with the hospital's medical staff and employees as they continue to provide quality care for their community," said Wayne T. Smith, chairman and CEO of CHS.
