The new hospital is a solution to Columbia St. Mary’s inefficient task of running Columbia Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital when the two facilities are within walking distance of each other. The consolidation of the two hospitals is estimated to save Columbia St. Mary’s $19 million a year and this amount should offset the expense of the new hospital, according to the report.

The $417 million cost of the hospital includes furnishings and equipment, and the cost of the two office buildings involved in the project is $77 million. This nearly $500 million investment is part of the $1.5 billion spent recently by health care systems in the Milwaukee area, according to the report.
