UW, Gonzaga sign agreement for medical school partnership

In late February, there were hints of a potential medical school partnership between Spokane, Wash.-based Gonzaga University and Seattle-based University of Washington. Now the schools have officially announced their partnership.

Through the University of Washington School of Medicine-Gonzaga University Partnership, a new class of students will begin courses on the Gonzaga campus this fall.

The University of Washington had ties in Spokane through the WWAMI Medical Education Program, the medical school for Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Although it hoped to build its presence in the area, it dropped out when Pullman-based Washington State University announced plans to build a medical school there. The University of Washington contacted Gonzaga in 2014, and the partnership was born.

“Together with Gonzaga, we will educate the next generation of health professionals and enhance the health, wellbeing and prosperity of the entire region,” said UW President Ana Mari Cauce, PhD.
