University of the Incarnate Word scores medical school accreditation

San Antonio-based University of the Incarnate Word has received accreditation for its medical school by the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.

The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine will now be able to begin recruiting students immediately and will start accepting applications June 1. It will begin classes at its campus at the former Brooks Air Force Base in the fall of 2017 with an anticipated 150 students.

Founding Dean Robyn Madson, DO, said accreditation is a "crucial step" in the medical school's progress, and that it now has the "green light to move forward" with its plans, according to the report.

The medical school's provisional accreditation status from COCA will be effective July 1.
