University of Montana to Launch New Residency Program

The University of Montana in Missoula has partnered with medical providers to create a new family medicine residency program.

The Family Medicine Residency of Western Montana aims to lessen the effects of the anticipated shortage of rural healthcare providers. Forecasts suggest the state will start losing 22 primary care physicians to retirement every year starting in 2014. Additionally, Montana has no medical school and ranks 50th in the nation for graduate medical education slots. There are only two residency positions for every 100,000 people.

The new program will start next summer and eventually will train 30 resident physicians at a time. It will be coordinated by UM's College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences, and the partners in the program are Community Medical Center in Missoula, Kalispell (Mont.) Medical Center, Partnership Health Center in Missoula and St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.
