University of Houston names 3 deans for new medical school

The University of Houston selected three deans for its new medical school, which is slated to open in 2020 pending approval, according to Chron.com.

The school hired Ruth Bush, MD, to serve as associate dean for medical education; Kathryn Horn, MD, to serve as associate dean for student affairs, admission and outreach; and David Buck, MD, to serve as associate dean for community health. All three administrators previously served at Texas colleges.

"The success of a medical school starts with the quality of its leadership, and we are thrilled to be assembling a dynamic team of proven leaders in medical education," Stephen Spann, MD, founding dean of the school, told Chron.com "They will all play a critical role in training a new breed of physicians that understand health disparities and social determinants of health."

Although the university regents voted to create the medical school in November, the proposed medical school must still receive approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Legislature. It also must be accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
