California has the highest number of emergency medicine physicians in the country and South Dakota has the lowest number, according to State Health Facts, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

The data is compiled from a special data request on state licensing information from Redi-Data, a provider of data services and solutions. The most recent data available is for November 2012.

There are a total of 41,479 emergency medicine physicians in the United States, according to the data. The top 10 states with the highest number of emergency medicine physicians are:

1. California — 4,713
2. New York — 2,844
3. Texas — 2,323
4. Michigan — 2,290
5. Pennsylvania — 2,287
6. Florida — 2,175
7. Ohio — 1,970
8. Illinois — 1,941
9. Massachusetts — 1,335
10. North Carolina — 1,250
