The physician specialties with the least burnout

Public health and preventive medicine physicians reported having the least burnout of physician specialties, according to Medscape's latest report on physician burnout and depression.

The "Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression Report 2023: 'I Cry and No One Cares'" is based on survey responses from more than 9,100 physicians across 29 specialties, which were collected between June and October 2022.

Of specialties, emergency medicines was ranked to have the most burnout in both Medscape's report and the AMA's "Organizational Biopsy" report, with the percentage of surveyed physicians reporting feeling burned out ranging from 65 percent to 62 percent, respectively.

Here are the five physician specialties with the least burnout:

1. Public health and preventive medicine: 37 percent

2. Pathology: 39 percent

3. Cardiology: 43 percent

4. Nephrology: 44 percent

5. Orthopedics: 45 percent
