Rush University taps Rutgers medical school dean for president role: 5 points

Chicago-based Rush University selected Sherine E. Gabriel, MD, to serve as president, effective in February 2019.

Rush University is composed of four colleges, including Rush Medical College and Rush University College of Nursing.

Here are five points:

1. Dr. Gabriel is currently dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J.

2. Prior to that, she was dean of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.

3. A rheumatologist, she has received numerous research grants from the National Institutes of Health. She has 250-plus peer-reviewed publications to her name.

4. Dr. Gabriel is a past president of the American College of Rheumatology and has received the organization's Henry Kunkel Young Investigator Award.

5. Dr. Gabriel succeeds Larry Goodman, MD, who will continue to serve as CEO of Rush University Medical Center and the Rush academic health system. Dr. Goodman has served as leader of both the university and health system since 2012.
