Optum to acquire 230-physician Reliant Medical Group in Massachusetts

Eden Prairie, Minn.-based OptumHealth, a subsidiary of Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare, revealed plans to acquire Reliant Medical Group, a physician group in Worcester, Mass.

Members of the 230-physician organization unanimously voted to approve the proposed acquisition May 9. The group's board of trustees approved the deal during a vote in April, according to the report.

A spokesperson for Reliant told the Worcester Business Journal Online the medical group does not have plans to terminate any of its 2,500 employees.

The organizations will move toward signing a definitive acquisition agreement. The proposed deal is subject to regulatory approval. If approved, Reliant will continue to be locally governed and retain its brand, according to the WBJO report.

"This is the beginning of a process that will strengthen Reliant and position the organization for continued success in the ever-changing and challenging healthcare industry," said Tarek Elsawy, MD, president and CEO of Reliant Medical Group.
