IU Health to build regional academic health campus, new home for Bloomington Hospital

Bloomington-based Indiana University, Indianapolis-based IU Health and the IU Health Bloomington Hospital announced Wednesday a plan to build a regional academic health campus in Bloomington, with a new location for the hospital at the heart of the project.

The campus, which is expected to employ thousands, is still in the planning stages. In addition to the hospital, a new health education building will give IU the opportunity to expand medical education, research and clinical programs in Bloomington.

"The creation of a regional academic health campus in Bloomington increases our ability to improve patient care by providing more opportunities for collaboration among our clinical, research and medical staff and faculty," Dan Evans, president and CEO of IU Health said in a statement. "It strengthens our partnership with the IU School of Medicine and our ability to develop a robust research program to bring more clinical trials and innovative treatment methods to the people of southern Indiana and beyond."

Planning for the new campus design will begin right away, according to the statement.
