Florida Hospital implementing canine guards as part of security ramp-up

Florida Hospital in Orlando is implementing a canine guard unit to help improve hospital security, according WLRN.

Six dogs and their handlers have been training to begin in February, but the hospital said it could hire up to six more dogs before the end of the year. The dogs are trained to smell gunpowder and other substances and were brought in as part of a $3.5 million security revamp in the wake of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting.

"We've chosen [the dogs] because as a large multi-campus facility, built to be friendly and open and welcome people, we have a real challenge in decreasing the opportunity for people who have bad intentions," said Eric Stevens, Florida Hospital's CEO, according to WLRN.
