Coalinga (Calif.) State Hospital went into lockdown over the weekend following patients' protest over a new rule that restricts their use of electronic devices, according to Fox 26.
The 1,500-bed hospital provides extended treatment for repeat sexual offenders who have already served their prison sentences. The new restrictions were implemented to reduce the amount of contraband smuggled into the hospital.
Though multiple individuals emailed Fox 26 that over 60 of the hospital's windows were broken during a 'near-riot' by patients, a hospital representative said the damage was not so extensive.
"Coalinga State Hospital remains under lockdown following a weekend protest by patients," said Ken August, a public information officer for California State Hospitals, according to Fox 26. "Approximately six windows were broken, some locks were jammed and some toilets were clogged by patients. No injuries have been reported. Additional police and other staff are on duty."
