Operation Hospital SMART, which stands for Strategic Medical Asset Readiness Training, aims to establish a national network of healthcare facilities to provide military personnel with medical training.

The four Cincinnati-area health systems participating in the project are Mercy Health, TriHealth, UC Health and Christ Hospital. The organizations will pool resources to provide service members with cutting-edge technology. Service members will also partner with civilians for several weeks of intense training, including participating on ambulance calls, working alongside emergency room staff and flying on medical transport helicopters, the report states.

Operation Hospital SMART was piloted at Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center last year.

The project’s operations in Cincinnati represent the first time four independent health systems have collaborated to train active duty and reserve personnel.
