Saturday is a key part of the routine for Albany Medical Center Hospital’s president and CEO.
Jason Mouzakes, MD, who was named to the role in early March, uses the day as one way to connect directly with staff across the organization.
“One of my favorite days is Saturday, when my schedule is more open,” Dr. Mouzakes said on the “Becker’s Healthcare Podcast.” “I come in early, participate in a safety huddle and then spend the morning connecting with clinicians, staff and support teams across the campus.”
Dr. Mouzakes is a veteran of the 766-bed hospital, which anchors Albany Med Health System and spans about 4.5 million square feet, with nearly 10,000 employees. He was promoted to hospital CEO from executive vice president and hospital general director.
As hospital CEO, Dr. Mouzakes oversees hospital operations, clinical strategy, workforce development, and quality and safety performance. He also plays a key role in advancing First Choice 2030, the health system’s long-term strategy focused on quality, clinical excellence, access and academic growth.
Dr. Mouzakes joined Albany Medical Center more than 35 years ago as a student and later served as a surgeon, department chair and hospital leader before being named CEO.
On Saturdays, he said he aims to engage with as many people as possible.
“It’s an opportunity to listen, which is something [Albany Med Health System President and CEO Dan Pickett III] has emphasized,” Dr. Mouzakes said. “I gather insights on what’s working well and where there are opportunities to improve. Being embedded in the organization as a former student, clinician and leader is a constant reminder of the importance of staying connected to the front lines.”
That approach comes as health systems nationwide continue to face workforce challenges. Dr. Mouzakes said engagement, development and listening are essential for leaders.
“Our success depends on the success of our people,” he said. “We must focus on engagement, development and listening to our teams.”
