Amy Mutter is director of sales for Roanoke, Va.-based Innovative Insurance Group. In an op-ed recently published in The Roanoke Times, Ms. Mutter argued that single-payer systems control costs by limiting access to healthcare, which would only hurt Americans. Though many Americans look to the United Kingdom as an example of a successful single-payer system, Ms. Mutter points out that their National Health System covers only 38 percent of cancer medications approved for sale in 2015.
Ms. Mutter also argues that government controls on drug distribution dissuade companies from investing money into innovative new medicines.
“Disenchanted with the ACA marketplaces, tens of millions of Americans now dream of government-funded single-payer health care. If politicians actually grant their wish, patients and taxpayers would experience nightmares of rationed care, reduced innovation and economic devastation,” Mutter writes.
