VA may require additional emergency funding for Veteran’s Choice program after $2.1B August package

Though the Department of Veterans Affairs received $2.1 billion in an emergency funding package from Congress in August for its Veteran’s Choice program, the Trump administration said it may require additional funding as early as December, according to ABC News.

The Veteran’s Choice program pays for veteran visits to non-VA providers if their wait times are longer than 30 days or they live more than 40 miles from a VA facility. The VA hopes to find a long-term funding solution for the program, but in the meantime, says the current funding may run out any time between early December and March.

“It’s disheartening,” said Carlos Fuentes, legislative director of Veterans of Foreign Wars. “Imagine if a veteran has to cease chemotherapy treatment during Christmas.”
