Toby Cosgrove: 4 essential behaviors for effective healthcare leadership

Healthcare leaders need four key behaviors to meet the challenges in the industry, according to a recent LinkedIn post by Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Delos "Toby" Cosgrove, MD.

1. Lead through change. Dr. Cosgrove said it is imperative for today's healthcare leaders to have a clear vision for the future. "Innovation is essential, and so is the courage to fail," he said. "Most importantly, we must never give up."

2. Maintain integrity. Healthcare leaders earn credibility by "walking the talk," said Dr. Cosgrove. "Drawing on our own experiences, we need to guide the team with honesty, clarity and mutual respect at every interaction."

3. Foster teamwork. It's essential healthcare leaders encourage team members to work together toward common goals, according to Dr. Cosgrove.

4. Create a learning environment. "Each of us needs to inspire and uplift our teams with a commitment to their professional growth and development," said Dr. Cosgrove. "We set the example for lifelong learning by continuing to grow into our own leadership roles."
