'The Squad': 4 women surgeons' professional, parental support network

In East Norriton, Pa., four women surgeons have formed a close relationship to support one another inside and outside the operating room.

Swathi Vanguri, MD, a gynecological surgeon; Laura Greco, MD, a colorectal surgeon; Catherine Schermer, MD, a general surgeon; and Yarini Quezada, MD, a urogynecological surgeon, collaborate at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, according to a May 18 news article from Philadelphia-based Einstein Healthcare Network.

They often consult each other on surgeries, refer patients to one another and even work together in the operating room. This partnership can provide better outcomes for patients, the article said. In one case, Dr. Vanguri performed a robotic hysterectomy and Dr. Greco performed a resection of the colon through the same incision. Combining the surgeries prevented the patient from needing a second and larger incision.

The team, who have named themselves "The Squad" after an animated TV series about space defenders, says they are a "collegial group of women." They are also bonded through their role as parents.

"It's so important for women in male-dominated fields, especially those who are moms and have to deal not only with a high-stress job, but who have kids at home, to support each other through a shared experience," Dr. Greco said.
