Ben Marcum, MD, is a family physician and delivers babies at the hospital. In August, two OB-GYNs are retiring from Texas Health Stephenville, and THR will suspend labor and delivery services while they recruit new physicians. Dr. Marcum claims THR ignored viable temporary options, particularly a Fort Worth, Texas-based staffing company, to keep the unit open while they recruit new physicians.
“This is part of a much bigger problem,” Dr. Marcum said, according to the report. “Many of us are frustrated with the THR system. Over the past seven years they have not shown a great amount of support for community physicians.”
Dr. Marcum believes the issue stems from the lack of a local board at Texas Health Stephenville. THR dissolved the local board a year ago, according to the report.
“The leadership of the hospital doesn’t even live in our community and isn’t in tune with our needs,” he said, according to the report. “A board in Arlington makes all the decisions for Stephenville.”
THR said in a statement that it is actively recruiting three OB-GYNs and the temporary solutions available to keep the unit open didn’t meet safety standards.
