Speculation has begun as to whom the Trump administration will pick to replace FDA chief Scott Gottlieb, MD, who resigned earlier this week and plans to leave his post next month.

“I’ve expressed my thoughts privately and I’ll keep them private. I think that there’s some good people being thought of for the acting position,” Dr. Gottlieb said during a March 6 event hosted by The Hill, according to STAT News.

“In terms of a nominee, that’s obviously a longer process and I don’t think they’re at the point of making decisions around that yet. But I think in terms of who steps in to fill the role in an acting capacity, there’s some good names in the mix,” he added.

STAT compiled a list of eight individuals who may be chosen to replace Dr. Gottlieb:

1. Amy Abernethy, MD, PhD, the former CMO of health data firm Flatiron Health, now part of Roche. Dr. Abernethy was named principal deputy commissioner of the FDA earlier this year.

2. Ned Sharpless, MD, director of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., part of the National Institutes of Health. He has served in the position since October 2017.

3. Brett Giroir, MD, assistant secretary for health at HHS.

4. Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

5. Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, who served as FDA commissioner under former President George W. Bush from 2002-04 and as CMS administrator from 2004-06.

6. Jerome Adams, MD, the current surgeon general of the U.S.

7. Jim O’Neill, a former principal associate deputy secretary of HHS.

8. Joe Gulfo, MD, who serves as the executive director of the Lewis Center for Healthcare Innovation and Technology at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J, according to his personal website.
