Dr. Shulkin has proposed updating the Veteran’s Choice Program with a replacement called the Veterans Coordinated Access and Rewarding Experiences Program. According to coverage from the LA Times, Dr. Shulkin plans to focus the VA on providing care that less common in the private sector, such as post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, while looking to partner with the private sector on common existing services, such as maternity care.
He said he would like to reallocate funds for the VA in the federal budget so they are less siloed and in a more flexible, “singular pot” of money, according to the report. He also said he plans to fill vacancies by recruiting from the private sector.
Dr. Shulkin is expected to share more details on the updated program in the fall, according to the LA Times.
