Roughly 20 percent of the organization’s cases of employee misconduct are related to drug theft, but since 2009 only 3 percent of employees involved in drug theft have been disciplined.
David Shulkin, secretary of the VA, said he hopes the policy would speed up the investigation process and lead to the swift termination of anyone found guilty of drug theft. However, he noted that this policy would not be able to affect the roughly 1,200 pending cases of misconduct the department is already facing.
