The film will focus on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes — to be played by Jennifer Lawrence — and the rise and fall of her blood testing startup.

Theranos launched in 2003 with a blood testing device the company claimed could produce quicker test results with a single drop of blood. While the startup was once valued at $9 billion, Theranos’ downfall came in 2015, when The Wall Street Journal published an investigative report alleging its devices were flawed and inaccurate.

The movie will be based on the book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in Silicon Valley, which hits book stores May 21 and is authored by John Carreyrou, the Wall Street Journal reporter who first broke the story on Theranos.

Adam McKay, whose past projects include “The Big Short” and “Anchorman,” will direct the film.
