Kaleida Health misses contract bid deadline, nurses to lose jobs in Buffalo schools

Unionized Kaleida Health nurses will no longer work at schools in Buffalo, N.Y., according to a report by WIVB news.

The Buffalo-based healthcare provider has contracted with the local school district in the past, but it missed the latest application deadline by more than 15 minutes, the TV news station stated.

Kaleida nurses and supporters urged the Buffalo Public School Board to reconsider Kaleida's bid during a recent meeting, but the board approved a new deal with two companies — Park City, Utah-based Supplemental Health Care and Oldsmar, Fla.-based Sunbelt Staffing.

The nonunion jobs are "going to be the same quality, and credentials, and licensing and service the same," Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Kriner Cash said, according to the report. "The only thing, it will take just like with a new teacher, just like with a new superintendent, or a new school board member, it will take a minute to ramp up, get up to speed."

Dozens of Kaleida Health nurses will lose their jobs.

Kaleida Health called it "a cost-cutting, anti-union decision by the city schools."

"The superintendent and their staff say they couldn’t review our bid, yet board members say we were the most expensive option. Which one is it?," the organization said in a statement to Becker's Hospital Review. "At this time, our focus is on our nurses and staff who we will continue to protect. All have been guaranteed positions within our organization.”
