Sen. Bill Cassidy's plan to 'make healthcare affordable again'

Sen. Bill Cassidy, MD, R-La., published a white paper May 29 outlining a plan for healthcare reform.

The white paper, entitled "Ideas to Make Health Care Affordable Again," focuses on the following six policy areas:

  • Empowering patients to choose how much they will pay for healthcare
  • Lowering insurance premiums
  • Increasing competition
  • Decreasing drug costs
  • Eliminating administrative burden and costs
  • Lowering costs with a focus on primary care, prevention and chronic disease management.

The paper endorses greater use of health savings accounts, more price transparency, high-risk pools, medical liability reform and repeal of the employer mandate. It calls for passage of the Bipartisan Stabilization Act, which would fund cost-sharing reduction subsidies, increase flexibility of state 1332 innovation waivers, allow for the sale of insurance across state lines, allot federal funding for high-risk pools and increase copper plans on the individual market.

"I'm willing to work with the administration and anyone in Congress to enact legislation that addresses the six key policy issues laid out in this paper," Dr. Cassidy wrote. "No one has cornered the market on good ideas. With smart policy we can lower healthcare costs for American families."
