New Loma Linda University Hospital to Open Friday, Following Delay

The new, $211 million Loma Linda University Medical Center-Murrieta (Calif.) will open Friday, after receiving licensure approval from the California Department of Public Health, according to an announcement by the hospital.

The hospital had originally planned to open in March following a four-day state inspection, but inspectors determined a license would not be granted without a second inspection. The state did not provide a reason for the second inspection, according to a Press-Enterprise report.

The 106-bed hospital was intended to be a joint-venture between Loma Linda University Medical center and local physicians. However, the healthcare reform law passed last year barred the opening of new physician-owned hospitals after December. Loma Linda bought out the physicians’ interest in order to accept Medicare patients and provide care to “as many patients as possible,” according to a spokesperson for the hospital.
