The 237-bed hospital, which merged with Neptune, N.J.-based Meridian Health in January, has made the change to reflect the hospital’s growth as well as its future plans to continue expanding services.
In recent years, Southern Ocean has expanded its cancer care programs, orthopedic services and cardiovascular services, including becoming a state-designated primary stroke center. In 2011, the hospital will begin an emergency department expansion project.
“This is a subtle name change that makes a big statement on our direction, and reflects the success of the past 38 years in advancing our mission,” Joseph P. Coyle, president of Southern Ocean, said in the release. “Our new name positions the medical center for the future, and is a testament to the growth made possible by so many over the years and our continued commitment to the local community which we proudly serve.”
