New Chase Brexton CEO aims to build confidence within organization, community

Patrick Mutch, the new CEO of Baltimore-based Chase Brexton Health Care, has spent his first four months on the job bridging the gap between the system’s management and workers, along with helping many of the hospital’s uninsured patients, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Tensions at the hospital rose last summer as workers fought with management in an effort to unionize, which culminated with an August vote overwhelmingly in favor of joining the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East union. Though Mr. Mutch has said he’s open to negotiations, he has yet to settle on a contract with the union.

Union members say they appreciate Mr. Mutch’s positive attitude, but are skeptical of real change until they successfully negotiate a contract.

Roughly half of Chase Brexton’s patients are Medicaid enrollees, though 20 percent of the system’s patients are uninsured. In an effort to help patients and cover their own bills, Chase Brexton counselors have been working closely with uninsured patients to help them sign up for Medicaid.
