Those affected by the layoffs were in management or support positions and were not directly involved in patient care, according to the report.
Mercy Medical Center President Robert Ritz cited low Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, as well as the two-midnight rule, as reasons for cutting costs. Additionally, he said Mercy’s accountable care organization has been successful in lowering admissions, which has in turn lowered revenue. “The economic rewards from payers have been small,” he told the Des Moines Register. However, he told reporters Mercy is still profitable.
Mercy, which is part of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives, employs more than 7,000 people, according to its website.
